The calculation runs in the browser. It is general mathematics, not a UK financial product.
Percentage difference
Two numbers on the same scale: absolute gap, change from A to B, and symmetric difference.
This is unit mathematics. Pounds, items, or points only mean both numbers share a unit. It is not a UK tax or statistical claim.
Value A
Base for the change
Value B
Comparison value
Target change from A
Optional reverse calculation
Result
Value B is larger by 10.
The change from A to B is 25 %. The symmetric percentage difference is 22.222 %. Change uses A as the base. The difference treats both values as peers.
- Absolute difference
- 10
- Change A → B
- 25 %
- Symmetric percentage difference
- 22.222 %
- B as a percentage of A
- 125 %
Method
The absolute gap is |B − A|. The symmetric percentage difference divides that gap by the average of the absolute values. The change from A to B divides the same gap by A. When A is 0, the change stays blank.
Assumptions
- Both entries use the same unit.
- There is no inflation adjustment and no compound interest.
- The symmetric difference is 100 × |B − A| / ((|A| + |B|) / 2). The change is 100 × (B − A) / A when A is not zero.
Questions
What is the difference between difference and change?
Change asks how far B has moved from A. The symmetric difference treats both values alike and uses the average of their magnitudes as the base.
Why is the change blank when A is zero?
You cannot divide by zero. The absolute gap is still shown.
